The Fourth Sunday in Lent--like its counterpart the third Sunday in Advent--is one of only two Sundays in the church year where rose-colored vestments are used. The Fourth Sunday is sometimes called by its Latin name, "Laetare Sunday," (pronounced lay-tair'-ay)--lit. "rejoice"--coming from a passage in Isaiah 66:10: "Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her." The color rose, a lighter and more cheerful one than the dark violet used for the other Sundays in Lent, is used in keeping with the theme of this Sunday, which falls at the mid-point of Lent. It is a sort of break for those observing the rigors and disciplines of Lent, and a reminder of the joy that is to come: following the Passion and Death of Our Lord comes the Resurrection, which we celebrate on Easter Day.
